Ki-mochi: A humble neighbourhood dessert cafe bringing in a unique twist

A cafe tucked in a quiet neighbourhood in Ang Mo Kio, this cafe offers a signature dessert: mochi pancakes. While mochi waffles are quite common and popular now, there are not really much mochi pancakes seen in Singapore. Pairing with a scoop or two of ice-cream creates a tantalizing dessert that marries a sweet and savory flavor profile together.

A new dessert cafe located in a quiet neighborhood about 10 minutes walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT. Price-wise, it costed me $4.50 for 2 pieces of mochi pancake and $4.50 for a single scoop of ice-cream (there are no premium flavor pricing thankfully).

I ordered the mochi pancake, which is a unique offering for a café specializing in the simple concept of waffle & ice cream. They also have a modest amount of ice-cream flavors, which they allow you to sample before on you decide your preferred flavor. I sampled their pistachio ice-cream, but it tasted artificial and lacked any pistachios in it. I settled for a classic and safe combination: milk & honey ice cream with their signature mochi pancake. There was a nice and light crisp bite to the exterior of the pancake which gave it a nice contrast to the chewy and soft filling. it was pretty satisfying to bite into and chew and goes nicely with the cold ice cream. However, I did find it a tad bit greasy on the exterior, probably from the oil/butter used to prevent the pancake from sticking to the pan.

Now, on to the ice-cream A simple & classic flavour of milk & honey. I definitely tasted a hint of sweetness with a floral note to it, but I wished there was a stronger initial hit of honey. It contrasted nicely with mochi pancake, especially with the difference in temperature of the two components, one hot and one cold. The staff was also very nice and allowed me to sample some ice-cream flavors as well. I tried the pistachio flavor, but it fell short and tasted artificial.

Overall, I enjoyed my experience here, and it was quiet when I came here on Saturday noon. The number of seats are quite limited though, so do be ready to wait for a bit if you come here and the seats are full.
